Sustainable Practice: Recycling Cooking Oil

At Tyddyn Isaf Camping and Caravan Park, sustainability is a key focus. As part of our ongoing commitment to achieving net-zero status by 2030, we’re constantly seeking new sustainable practices. One such initiative revolves around our on-site takeaway, where we serve delicious, freshly cooked meals for our guests. However, cooking with oil means we generate a significant amount of waste each season.

Last year, we made a significant change. We partnered with WasteCare, a company specializing in the collection and recycling of waste cooking oil. Through this, our used oil is no longer just waste—it’s transformed into something beneficial for both the environment and our business.

WasteCare collected 11 million litres of used oil last year alone, recycling it into sustainable biofuels. These biofuels can power vehicles, generate energy, and heating, providing a cleaner, greener alternative to traditional fuels.

What many people don’t realize is that improperly disposed of oil, whether in landfills or down drains, can end up in our oceans. This causes severe disruption to marine ecosystems and threatens already endangered species. By recycling cooking oil, we help reduce these harmful impacts while also contributing to the production of useful products like animal feed and biodiesel.

More importantly, biofuels made from used oil are carbon-neutral, producing no carbon monoxide and burning clean. This makes them an eco-friendly solution in the fight against climate change.

We’re proud to be taking another step toward our sustainable goal, helping preserve the beautiful Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where Tyddyn Isaf is located, and making a positive impact on the planet we all share.
