Explore Parys Mountain – The Copper Kingdom!

The small town of Amlwch is situated on the North Coast of Anglesey and has a rich and diverse history, with its industrial past marked upon the landscape to tell of its historically interesting timeline.

When you walk down the street of Amlwch, it is difficult to imagine that it was once a bustling community of around 10,000 people during its mining heyday which attracted the likes of Michael Faraday, the scientist who invented the first electric motor, and James Watt who is famous for his improvements of the steam train.

Amlwch came to prominence during the 18^th century during the Industrial Revolution as the town once belonged to one of the largest copper mines in the world.

It was with thanks to a local miner, Rowland Puw, who had discovered a pure seam on Parys Mountain which resulted in the realization that Parys Mountain was still rich in ore.

After his discovery, Rowland Puw was awarded a bottle of whiskey (brand unknown) and a rent-free cottage.

Parys Mountain’s mining history, however, goes back further than the 18^th century. It’s believed to have begun 4000 years ago during the Bronze Age after evidence of hammerstones were found underground.

Parys Mountain is often referred to as the planet Mars due to it being saturated with the colours orange, yellow, red and brown. It is the uncanny surroundings that has made it a backdrop for films, TV series and photoshoots.

There is a network of paths around the mountain with a viewing area that offers spectacular panoramic views of the dramatic landscape, with distant views of Snowdonia mountain range.

You may be surprised to find several plants inhabiting the mountain, however, despite the soil contamination, you will find some flowering plants that are able to tolerate the high concentration of copper and zinc.

The Copper Kingdom is an interactive exhibition that invites you learn all about the history of Parys Mountain and the individuals who were involved, including the important role of the Copper Ladies.

The Copper Kingdom exhibition is located in Amlwch Port which became a crucial link in the exportation of copper from Parys Mountain.

Amlwch is only a 10 minute drive from Tyddyn Isaf Camping and Caravan Park and can be accessed via the coastal footpath.

You can also access public transport from the bus station (62 bus) which is only a short walk from Tyddyn Isaf. The buses run regularly and will take you on several routes around Anglesey – the bus schedule can be found here.
