Reduced Food Waste at Tyddyn Isaf!

Statistics state that bread is the second largest contributor to food waste with 20 million single slices of bread being thrown out on a daily basis in the UK.

The shop at Tyddyn Isaf Camping and Caravan Park has been stocking daily essentials for our visitors for many years now including toiletries, camping accessories, pet supplies, washing products, and food. However, like the majority of products – most products come with an expiry date. We found this to be a significant problem, in particular, with fresh products like bread.

Unfortunately, buying in packaged bread meant that we were constantly estimating the quantity that may be required from our guests. This often resulted in ordering too much bread that eventually went to waste once its expiry date had passed.

The UK already disposes of 9.5 million tonnes of food waste in a single year which equates to filling a shocking 190 Royal Albert Halls. Statistics state that bread is the second largest contributor to food waste with over 40% of what is produced is chucked out into our bins.

This season, we made it our mission to start the journey of becoming a no food waste caravan park – we have already significantly reduced our food waste by implementing a convenient ‘bread to order’ system. This new ordering system gives campsite guests the opportunity to preorder their bread and pastries the night before, meaning that they can collect freshly baked bread the next morning. This resulted in the eradication of having too much stock – we have not thrown a single slice of bread away since!

We have also stripped back the amount of single use plastic we throw away on a daily basis by packing your bread in an eco-friendly and reusable paper bag.
